The Network Between Dublin Airport and London Gatwick Airport

When you get unfamiliar with the aviation industry and the airports, you could find yourself making an research about it. You have lots of question marks about the industry and eventually, got squeezed. This case study aims to obtain a reliable source for identifying the aviation industry over the airports. These airports are London Gatwick Airport and Dublin International Airport.


First of all, we should examine the cities of the airports. Dublin is the capital city of Ireland. 4,803,748 person live in Ireland and the nearly quarter (1,024,027) of all population is living in Dublin (%21). Our other city is London, is also the capital city of England. 66,573,000 person living in England and the 13 percent of England population is living in London (8,825,000).

Airports are one of the key factors to explain the cities. The city of Dublin has only one airport named Dublin International Airport. Their ICAO code is EIDW, and the IATA code is DUB. In 2017, they carried approximately 29.6 Million passengers through their airport. 25.3 Million of this number flown as short-haul flights and the rest of 4.3 Million passengers flown as long-haul flights. On the other hand, London has 6 international airports but we will mention London Gatwick Airport. Their ICAO code is EGKK, and IATA code is LGW. In 2017, London Gatwick Airport carried approximately 45.6 Million passengers through their airport. Most of them were short-haul flights by 38.3 Million and the remaining part was long-haul flights by 7.3 Million.

When we look at the column, we can examine a direct flight between London Gatwick Airport to Dublin Airport and the direct flight from Dublin Airport to London Gatwick Airport. In this column, there are 7 days and 3 airlines which are flying to between Dublin and London Gatwick. That is, It starts from 10/29/2018 to 11/04/2018. In the first day, there are 15 flight from London Gatwick Airport to Dublin Airport and 12 flight is from Dublin to London Gatwick Airport. In the second day, we can see that London Gatwick to Dublin flight increases by 5 flights. Also, there is an increase by 2  flight from  Dublin to London Gatwick. In the third day, the number of flight is equal to the second day for London Gatwick to Dublin. However, Dublin to London flight number reaches the peak. This flight number is 20 flight. The flight number of fourth and fifth days is 20 in both directions. On the sixth day, there is a decrease in both flight routes. There is a %40 of drop for London to Dublin route. In other words, on this day, it has a lack of huge demand than other days. There is a %30 decrease for Dublin to London ways. In the final day, the column shows that there is a high increase again for both routes. London to Dublin route reaches 17 flights. However, Dublin to  London is going up to 20 flights. Aer Lingus and British Airways, and Ryanair have direct flights on this route. Also, Aer Lingus and British Airways are flag carriers. Nevertheless, Ryanair is a low-cost carrier and it totally has 89 flights between 7 days from both directions. And when we look at the Aer Lingus’ price and British Airways’ price, Aer Lingus is cheaper than British Airways. On the other hand, the price of a Ryanair ticket is cheaper than the British but it is similar to Aer Lingus prices. Also, Aer Lingus is owned subsidiary of British Airways and Iberia.

In this excel sheet, we can see Ryanair’s flight, Aer Lingus’s flight, and British Airways’ flight number in one week period between Dublin and London Gatwick. However, we examined Ryanair’s available seat kilometer (ASK). ASK is calculated with the following data for one day, one week, one month and one year. Initially, we used route kilometers, the number of seats, and the number of flight. After we multiply these numbers, we found its ASKs for day by day. We summed up these numbers, we found one week ASK. And we divided by 7 because we should find a weekly average. By using this number, we found its ASK monthly and yearly. To illustrate, ASK is 37,243,800 monthly and 453,132,900 yearly.

Before started to route traffic, we should know that 301.51 miles / 484.24 km is the distance from Dublin Airport to London Gatwick Airport. We have found average load factor RyanAir and Aer Lingus. These airlines’ average load factor is 92% because RyanAir’s load factor is 97% and Aer Lingus’ load factor is 87%. In addition, Ryanair is using B737, Aer Lingus is using A320, so total seat capacity is 363 (B737 seat capacity is 189 and A320’s seat capacity is 174), if we took the average of the seating capacity, we can find the average seats by 181, and it means 166 seats are used by passengers if we apply the average load factor. According to Skyscanner, weekly total flight number is 244 between Gatwick and Dublin but when we eliminated British Airways flight in this route, Ryanair and Aer Lingus have 170 flights in a week. Therefore, this destination has 24 flight daily, approximately 720 flight monthly and 8.760 flight yearly. If we want to find a revenue passenger, we should apply multiplication between flight number and seat number. In addition, Revenue Pax Kilometer is 13.658.480 ( 28.220 is revenue passenger multiplying by 484km is the distance forum DUB to LGW). As a result, between Dublin and Gatwick has daily passenger number is 3.984, weekly 28.220, monthly 119.520 and yearly 1.454.160
